Key Projects

Brighton and Hove Council Sports Development Unit
Brighton and Hove City Teaching Primary Care Trust

We are currently working on two key projects. Active for Life (since 2004) and a new Sports Coordinators Database (since mid 2005 started Summer 2006 ongoing). The details below give an idea of the scope of these projects.

Active for Life
Active For Life Online Sports Activity Database
In association with Brighton and Hove Council Sports Development Unit and
Brighton and Hove City Teaching Primary Care Trust

Active For Life
2004 - This site is a Brighton and Hove Council / Brighton and Hove Teaching Primary Care Trust funded initiative to get local groups to register their activity in an online database and make it searchable for local residents.
Technology - Using PHP and my SQL this site is interactive and managed from an administrative area. Groups register and are then vetted before they are published.
Spring 2005 - Online report generation using the data collected from the database. Graphs can be produced from the administration area of the site for set criteria. Write the facility to extract information from the database about specific groups into a CSV formatted file that can be imported into excel.
Site promotion - So it appears high up in search engines i.e. Google.

January 2006 - Website promotion, using Google Sitemap and other techniques to improve the Active for Life website ranking in Google. Checking the entries in the Active for Life online database are up to date.
Redevelopment - Active for Life website into a new CMS system provided by our recommended hosting company Worthers. This is an extremely powerful system that allows users complete control over the content of their web site. (Launch estimate Summer 2008)

Sports Coordinators Database
May 2006 - Creation of Sports Coordinators Database new database driven site to record Sports Activity Courses, Coaches and Attendance details.
The details recorded by the sports coordinators will be used to produce reports using the complex Key Performance Indicators set out in guidelines from Sport England for monitoring and evaluation. The reports will be in a simple to read tabular form using pdf file format. There will be a mechanism to upload the report data to Sport England's elected monitoring and evaluation software.

Technical Specification of the Sports Coordinators Database
There will be a login screen for the Coordinators to log into the database. This will select what data they see and uses the latest security technology to ensure that the participants’ personal details are kept private.
There will be a Main Menu for selecting one of the 4 areas listed above.
There will be an administration area for the Participants’ data where new participants can be added and existing participants details can be searched for and selected for amendment. The list of participants will depend on which coordinator has logged in, because they each have their own geographical areas to administer.
The administration area for the Coaches and Volunteers data would be almost the same as for the participants’ data. (These individuals can be either coaches or volunteers or both). It may depend on which coordinator is logged in as to which individuals are listed here, but could list all coaches and volunteers for the City if required.
Selecting an item to edit from either of these administration areas will open a simple, easy to use form for entering new data or amending existing data for the participants, coaches and volunteers. All the data required for the KPI's about these individuals will be recorded here.
The administration area for the Courses data would have the option for creating a new course record or finding the details for an existing course and selecting it for editing. It will depend on which coordinator was logged in as to which courses are listed here.
Selecting a course to edit will display the Course Details and the option to display a list of the participants on that course. New participants can be added and details, such as whether they have paid a deposit entered. There will be the option to send out confirmation emails and letters for those without email addresses. There will also be the option to add the coach and volunteers that will be supporting that course. There will be the facility to manage courses that run over several sessions.
The administration for the Reports data will list the different KPI reports that the Sports Development Department has elected to record. These will be overall reports consisting of cumulative data from all the coordinators.
Selecting a report in the administration area will calculate and display the results for that KPI1, between 2 dates where appropriate, as a table. There will be the option to export the data from the KPI reports in a format that is compatible with the Active England Value Mapping System. It will also be possible to export the reports as PDF files for printing or emailing.
There will also be an administrator login to allow the management of the database and access to all the data.
